When a person hears the word CONFLICT,this tends to be a topic and / or task that we always avoid at all cost. Unfortunately, there comes a time or two where we just can not avoid conflict, no matter what we do! Work conflict can happen in all types of ways such as: having work style differences, cultural differences, personality type conflicts, leadership conflicts.
Graduating college and now working with a fortune 500 company, I have witnessed some of these types of conflicts happen both in college and in the work place, as I am sure you have too! Whether you conquered you situations positively or not. I will go into detail with each potential conflict you may or may not come across in the work place and I will provide some potential solutions to help you get through those situations.
The first style of conflict that I will discuss is, work style differences. I have seen this in college and as well as in the actual work place. An example of a work style difference is where you may come across people who absolutely LOVE group projects and HATE individual task, or vice versa they absolutely LOVE to work independently and HATE group projects… Starting to sound familiar? Stating this, you can easily begin to see why this may cause conflict in the College/ workplace because those whom prefer to work by them selves usually struggle in group settings because they do not want to hear any body else input and/ or they may have just had a majorly bad experience from a previous group project they had in the past. So far I am sure a lot of us can relate to this scenario already right? (I know I can!). You may also have seen and/or experienced where you get into a group and you have a slacker in the group whom expects to ride off of everyone else and get that good grade and/ or use every one else in their group to look good in the work field to maybe get that promotion. I honestly could go on and on regarding this type of work style difference because feel it is super common and easy to fall into.
SOLUTIONS for WORK STYLE CONFLICT
I think it is very important to first understand everyones expectations within your group, and make sure to keep in mind that everyone does not have the same work style as you. But if you take the time to address the potential situation and listen to ALL sides. Then you can potentially stop the situation from even arising into any type of conflict. (Plus I think people in the corporate world love to hear not only about your success stories, but i believe they LOVE hearing about how you handle conflict. That is always a question during interviews!**TIP BY THEWAY).
The next style of conflict that I will discuss is Cultural differences. Culture is can be defined as a set of values , daily practices , traditions and/ or beliefs that a group can share. This can be because of a persons age, religion, and or gender. This type of conflict can be a very popular because naturally EVERYDAY we come across thousands of people, that come from ALL types of backgrounds. So you are bound to run in to this conflict style.
SOLUTIONS for CULTURAL CONFLICT
Its important to take into account that everyone is not going to follow your same values, or necessarily understand where or why you do the things you do. Stating this, to avoid these types of conflicts you must not be close minded and its important for you to listen to the other person side of the story, but it also equally important for them to hear your side as well to easily come up with a smooth solution.
Thirdly, we will discuss is personality type conflict. I think this type of conflict can be very relatable to cultural style conflicts. When a person has a conflict due to personality it can happen for reasons like miscommunication of a persons actions and/ or motives. It can be fueled by a person being closed minded and not willing to change therefore making it potentially complicated to work with. It can also happen if a person makes a potential inappropriate joking comment to you, but you don’t know they are joking, so you take offense. This type of conflict can happen to anyone in numerous situations.
SOLUTIONS for PERSONALITY CONFLICT
It is VERY important no matter if you feel you know that person well enough to think about what you are about to say. The reason being is, even though you might say something and and your intentions maybe for joking. It does not mean that the person you are trying to joke with will take it as a joke. Its extremely important when dealing with these types of personality conflicts to put all ego’s aside when trying to find a solution! Plus, it just naturally saves you from both parties having to go through all this trouble.
Lastly, we will discuss is leadership conflict. This conflict can be very popular in school and in the working world. Every leader has his or her way of choosing to run their teams whether its good or bad. You can run into leadership conflict based off of if your leader is being micromanaging, which can cause ALOT of problems. You can run into problems if you feel your leader is not taking you seriously or is not doing his or her job. You can run in to problems if you feel they are not on your team backing you up on certain situations. What ever the situation may be there can be a plethora reasons why you run in to a leadership conflict.
SOLUTIONS for LEADERSHIP CONFLICT
Its important to first understand who you are dealing with as your leader because if they feel you are running over them by jumping hoops or not taking their authority seriously, then you will get some conflict. My solutions is to have communication with your leader so that you can have good understanding from one another. If you have a leader who just is the definition of complicated for what ever reason that may be, and they choose to not listen. Then i would recommend going to HR(Human resourses) to see what options are available for you. Plus, its their career so they are well equipped in helping with any type of conflicts that you may face.
No matter what type of conflicts you may be dealing with,PLEASE do not let it get out of hand. If you and whomever the conflict arises with seems like it is snowballing into something bigger. I can not stress to not be afraid to go to HR(Human resources), as it is their job to catch things and make your work experience better.
