Have you come across that specific time in your life where it is time to interview, and you do not know how to prepare? If you have came across my page, it is probably because you may have finally received that “We want to interview you call!”, and if so CONGRATULATIONS!!! In this Tips and tricks interview guide I will show you how to prepare properly.
Whether this is your very first corporate interview held at your college career fair , or your 20th interview in your life time thus far, it is important that you RESEARCH! You want to do research on the companies that you are interested in interviewing with for two IMPORTANT reasons: 1) You may not truly like the company and/ or see that it aligns with your values and work ethics, and where your plans and goals want to be in the future. Stating this, you may EVEN see that the company of interest may not be a good fit you. Reason number 2) your potential interviewers may ask you questions during your interview regarding the company, so it is very important you research no matter what job/career you are aiming for.
No matter if you are great at interviewing, confident, outgoing, talkative, shy, introverted. It is very important to practice common interview questions that your interviewers could potentially ask you during your interview time. When I first started going through interviews with fortune 500 companies, I noticed that ALL my interviewers LOVED to ask me about Behavioral based questions. What that means just in case you do not know is, you could get asked a simple question like “How do would you handle conflict with a co-worker?”(HINT: click this link to head over to my How to handle conflict page and learn more about conflict). When practicing questions like these, it becomes easier and most importantly more smoother if you practice putting yourself in these types of behavioral based questions before your interview. Interviewers typically look for you to answer you interview behavior based questions using the STAR method below.
Hence why 9 times out of 10 you will be asked behavioral based questions during interview.
It is important that you prepare so that you are less likely to forget something or be as anxious. The key to preparing is you want to make everything go as smoothly as possible so that you do not have to stress your self out. I mean after all, you are potentially already going to be stressed out and anxious due to you wanting to do well in your interview. So to simply put it, don’t make things harder than what they need to be. Stating this, it is important to have you list of references, be prepared to share your work / experiences that you bring to the table. It is also important to pick out your outfit that you will wear to your interview the night before so it can already be nice and ironed if needed.
Next, It is EXTREMEMLY important to also have your resume up to date and bring at least 3-5 copies in a nice folder equipped with a pen. The reason why I say 3-5 resumes, is because you never know how many people will be interviewing you that day. Plus you want to be prepared and make sure everyone has a resume if needed. A HUGE TIP: PRINT RESUME OFF THE DAY BEFORE, just in case you have printer or computer problems.
Next PLEASE be sure to prepare questions to ask the company that is interviewing you. I can not stress how important this is as well.It really shows that you have done your research , and that you really want to claim the position of choice. By taking this action to ask questions to your interviewers also gives YOU the chance to interview the interviewers and the company as a whole. I mean who knows, you may get into the interview and realize this company is amazing, or vice versa you may be glad you dodge a potential bullet!
DAY OF INTERVIEW
It’s the day of the interview, which means it GAME TIME! You are Looking GOOD in your outfit of choice, and are going in as confident as you can be! It is recommended to be checked in to your interview 10-15mins before. During your time waiting you can go over and practice some behavioral based questions, look over your resume, or use the restroom and grab a drink of water.
IN THE INTERVIEW
It important to know that before you even get in to the interview room, to realize that AS SOON as you walk into the building you are being interviewed. So just be cautious about that, and how you treat people. Sometimes, your interviewers may even as the security guard at the front desk their opinion of you.
Now, it’s interview time! By now, one of the interviewers has come down to get you, or the secretary will walk and/or advise you where to go. Make sure to introduce yourself, and shake hands with CONFIDENCE. If you go into your interview slouchy , negative, and not confident the interview process probably won’t end well for you.I mean think about it? Would you hire someone like that?…. HIGHLY UNLIKELY!
Once you get into the interview room, stay calm. At this point you have done everything to prepare yourself to have a successful interview and see if this work place of choice is truly a path that you really want!
